White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson made a promise he couldn’t wait to keep, and so he enlisted the help of his brothers more than 1,000 miles away to make it happen Wednesday.
Anderson, who signed a six-year, $25 million contract last week, was busy wrapping up the final day of Cactus League play in Arizona. But he was able to watch on Facetime as they presented his mother, Lucille Brown, with a new Mercedes in his home state of Alabama.
“I didn’t want her to wait any longer,” Anderson said. “She was dancing and excited.”
The new car for his mother was the only thing Anderson spoke of buying after securing his new deal.
Anderson tweeted a photo of Brown with the car, a big red bow resting on the roof. Eight days earlier, he had tweeted a message to fans thanking them for their support with the hashtag #NothingChanges. He said he wanted fans to know he’s going to be the same player he was before, even with the contract in hand.
“No matter how much money I make or whatever the situation is, I’ll attack the game the way I have been,” Anderson said. “That’s what I branded myself to be, and I’ll just go about my business the same way I have. Nothing changes.
“It’s just the way I was raised. I’m very grateful. I treasure everything in life. Growing up I really didn’t have much, so it’s take care of everything you do get.”
Former Sox outfielder Adam Eaton spoke last season of feeling pressure to perform after signing his long-term deal.
Anderson said most of all the contract was “relieving” because he knows his one-year-old daughter, Peyton, will be taken care of, and he hopes he can focus on his game and not the expectations to perform.
“At the end of the day, we’re all human,” Anderson said. “It’s a tough game. Everyone knows that. I know that. I’m not going to go out and be a superhero every day. I just want to really separate myself from trying to think about that and go out and have fun.”
