Churro waffle ice cream sandwich at MAD Social

The first time I ate at MAD Social, I fell in love with the churro waffle: churro batter poured into a waffle iron, formed into a golden grid and fried to create the sweetest, crunchiest, crumbliest waffle of all time. Could it get any better? Actually, yes. Take that waffle, slap a tennis ball’s worth of gelato on top and add a second waffle on top of that. This is not theoretical; this is chef Mariela Bolanos’ gelato sandwich ($8). Bolanos makes the creamy gelato by hand, and the flavor in the sandwich rotates; currently it’s a rainbow-swirled riff on her favorite childhood flavor, Superman. This version, made with strawberry, raspberry, almond and vanilla gelatos, she calls Wonder Woman. Try it and you’re going to find yourself making one too many detours to West Madison Street this summer.
