Boys and Girls Clubs host annual golf outing

Boys and Girls Clubs of Northwest Indiana will host its annual It’s Fore the Kids! golf outing Monday at Briar Ridge Country Club, 123 Country Club Drive, Schererville. Registration will begin at 10:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at noon. A four-person scramble format with the purchase of skins and mulligans available. Foursomes starting at a partner sponsor level of $1,000 includes lunch, driving range, 18 holes of golf with cart, complimentary refreshments, social hour and prizes. Individual golfers are welcome. Porter County Park programs

Porter County Parks and Recreation has a variety of upcoming programs. Acrylic Painting, 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday at Hawthorne Park, 500 Ackerman Drive, Chesterton. Cost is $10, supplies provided. Youth Cross County, 5:45 to 6:45 p.m. Wednesday through Oct. 18 at Sunset Hill Campground, 775 Meridian Road, Valparaiso. Boys and girls ages 4-12 of all abilities and skill levels are welcome to join the Porter County Parks cross country team. Meets are tentatively scheduled for Saturday mornings, Sept. 30, Oct. 7, 14 and 21. Registration is open through Sept. 20. Spring Lake bingo reopens

The Spring Lake chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America has relaunched its weekly bingo events to raise funds for conservation and youth education programs. The new bingo license was approved by the Indiana Gaming Commission in May. Games are played at 6 p.m. Wednesdays at the chapter clubhouse, 4700 W. 49th Ave., Hobart. Lilly Endowment accepting grant applications

The Lilly Endowment is accepting applications for its annual Teacher Creativity Fellowship grant. The program, in its 31st year, is designed to give Indiana-based educators the opportunity to pursue innovative and research-based projects. The commitment behind this competitive program is to recognize, re-energize and support educators.

The foundation will award 100 grants worth $12,000 each next year. Teachers, librarians, guidance counselors, principals and assistant principals in public, private and parochial schools are eligible to apply. Applications are due by Sept. 1. Duneland Chamber meet and greet with new superintendent

The Duneland Chamber of Commerce will host a meet and greet luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 6 at Sand Creek Country Club, 1001 Sand Creek Drive, Chesterton. New Duneland Schools superintendent Dr. Ginger Bolinger will share her plans for the school system. The event is open to the public. Cost is $16 per person, which includes lunch. Senator Donnelly to speak at Chamber luncheon

Senator Joe Donnelly will be presented with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Spirit of Enterprise Award during the Michigan City Chamber of Commerce’s Federal Focus Luncheon from noon to 1 p.m. Sept. 1 in the Orleans Ballroom at Blue Chip Casino, 777 Blue Chip Drive, Michigan City. Donnelly also will share insights into the 114th session of Congress and take questions from the audience. Cost is $25 for members, $30 for nonmembers. Porter County Park schedules programs

Porter County Parks and Recreation has programs scheduled at Sunset Hill Farm Park, 775 Meridian Road, Valparaiso. Youth cross country will be held at the campground from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m. Wednesdays through Oct. 18. Registration is open through Sept. 20. Meet the Animals will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday and Sept. 8 at the animal barn. The program is free. Nature scavenger hunt will run from 10:45 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday and Sept. 8. Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore programs

Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore will host a an afternoon of exploration, with a ranger, through Bailly Homestead, Chellberg Farm and Bailly Cemetery from noon to 4 p.m. Sept. 3, beginning at the parking lot, 618 N. Mineral Springs Road, Porter. Learn about early settlers and farmers who came to the region in the 1800s. At 4 p.m., children can help feed the farm animals at Chellberg Farm. A morning hike to the top of Mount Baldy will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Sept. 3 beginning at the parking lot, 101 Rice St., Michigan City. No reservations required for the hike. Open registration for sign language class

Disposable Theatre Improv comedy classes set to begin

Northwest Indiana’s improv comedy group will offer a six-week Improv 101 class for adults from 5 to 6:30 p.m. beginning Sept. 10 at Top Fuel Crossfit, 2590 Morthland Drive, Valparaiso. Disposable Theatre has two performance groups — Disposable Theatre and Same Difference — with cast members from all walks of life. The classes cover the basics of improvisation, creating scenes, building an understanding of improvisation and performance games, and stimulating creativity. Tuition for the workshop is $110. Master Recycler class set for fall

The next Porter County Master Recycler class, a comprehensive, six-week program, is scheduled from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Sept. 12 through Oct. 17, at the Greg Phillips Emergency Services Building, 1995 S. State Road 2, Valparaiso. Sponsored by Porter County Recycling and Waste Reduction, the course is open to adults who live or work in Porter County and will feature guest speakers and field trips to help participants learn about waste flow processes, household hazardous waste, landfills, vermicomposting and backyard composting. The cost is $30. Those who attend must commit to 30 hours of volunteer time to educate others in their community to reduce waste in the home and at work. Valparaiso accepting applications for police officers

The Valparaiso Police Department is accepting applications for individuals seeking a career in law enforcement. Application packets are available at the department, 355 S. Washington St. Applications also can be downloaded from the department’s website www.valparaisopolice.org and returned to the department by mail. Applicants must be at least 21 years old, hold a high school degree or GED, be a U.S. citizen, have a valid driver’s license and have no prior felony arrests. Association offers grant money for Lake County teachers

The Lake County Retired Teachers Association is offering grant money for active teachers in the public schools of Lake County for the 2017-18 school year. Grants range from $200 to $500, with a total of $2,000 to be awarded. Grants will be assigned for innovative projects that give students an edge and jump-start to further learning. Any active Lake County public school teacher can apply. Deadline for application is Sept. 30. Winners will be notified by Oct. 31. UMW seeking artists and crafters

The United Methodist Women of the First United Methodist Church in LaPorte will host their fourth annual Arts and Crafts Show Sept. 30. This year’s show will be at the LaPorte County Fairgrounds, 2581 W. State Road 2, LaPorte, which can accommodate 90 to 100 vendors.
