Look out — I think I heard an honest politician. In light of the recent soda tax repeal, Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas said she can cut 12 percent of her department’s budget without layoffs. Other department heads went straight for people’s jobs; guess they couldn’t find any wasted money elsewhere.

Board President Toni Preckwinkle and the county commissioners (who raise the taxes and vote to spend the money) haven’t said anything about cutting their own budgets. How many staff members will they let go? And how many of them will be family members or patronage workers?

I wonder if this soda tax repeal and the chaos to come will affect how people will vote for their representatives next year.
