Roof repairs and heating and air-conditioning system replacements are just some of the $6 million capital improvement projects scheduled for completion next year in Naperville School District 203.
The school board annually approves a list of jobs that will be done in the coming year, with most expected to be undertaken during the summer when students are out of school. The authorization gives staff time to have design and engineering work completed before seeking contractor bids.
At future meetings, bids will be brought to the board before any contract is awarded.
The most-expensive project slated for fiscal year 2018-19 is converting Scott Elementary School’s heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system from electrict to gas. Its cost is an estimated $1.25 million.
Other big ticket items are replacing sections of the roof at Naperville Central and Naperville North high schools, at an estimated cost of $935,000, and spending about $700,000 to renovate two science laboratories at Naperville North.
The district also is planning to replace the boiler at Highlands Elementary for about $365,000, the HVAC system in the gymnasium at Lincoln Junior High for about $300,000, and the HVAC system in the band area at Naperville North for about $450,000.
For the last several years, the district has been trying to update school libraries across the district to create modernized learning commons. This year, $1 million has been allocated for work at four schools. Which schools will receive the upgrade has yet to be determined.
Also not yet decided is another $1 million smaller repair projects, such as minor HVAC work, plumbing and electrical upgrades, door and window replacements, and carpet and flooring restoration, officials said.
