A Chicago police officer heading to a homicide scene was injured when the marked squad SUV he was in collided with an off-duty officer’s minivan and a Toyota Corolla near the Leighton Criminal Court Building on the West Side, police said.
The 54-year-old driver of the Toyota was issued a traffic citation for failure to yield to an emergency vehicle following the crash just before 10:10 a.m. in the 2600 block of South California Boulevard that also injured a female passenger in the Toyota, according to Officer Laura Amezaga, a police spokeswoman.
The officer suffered a hand injury and was treated and released from St. Anthony Hospital, while the 51-year-old woman who was the Toyota passenger was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where her condition was stabilized.
The police SUV had its sirens and lights on and was heading to a shooting in the 1300 block of South Troy Street in which a 32-year-old man was shot to death by a man on a bicycle wielding a rifle, according to police. The SUV collided with the Toyota and a Chrysler minivan driven by the off-duty officer.
The man driving the Toyota and the off-duty officer both declined medical attention, police said.
Details of the circumstances of the crash weren’t immediately available, but all the vehicles involved were expected to be towed.
All those involved were from Chicago. The Toyota driver was scheduled to appear in court Nov. 21, police said.
