To the editor: The results came in: Roy Moore was defeated in his bid to be Alabama’s new U.S. senator. It appears the Republican Party may have dodged one bullet for the time being, as it will not have to deal with the possible seating of Moore in the U.S. Senate.

However, the apparent leader of the GOP, frequently referred to as the president of this country among other things, may have again put his foot in his mouth with his previous endorsement of Moore. If he uses his usual tact, I presume Donald Trump will use some of his “alternative facts” to try and weasel out of that, as he so often does.

Yet, the GOP still must deal with this elephant in the room as its so-called leader again deals with the sexual assault allegations against him, among other things facing the party.

I, for one, can only hope that the heat is now turned up full blast on Trump, and without a letdown. In the long run, this may be a way for the GOP to save face with the electorate and rid itself (and the rest of us) of a major problem somewhere down the road. Then it can get on with doing what really needs to be done to make this country great again.

What’s the rush?

To the editor: Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell withheld voting on President Barack Obama’s Supreme Court nominee, saying that the voters should decide which winner of the 2016 presidential election should choose the new justice.

Now, he wants to rush through the vote on his unpopular tax reform bill without allowing Alabamians to be heard on this matter through their newly elected senator.

This is why people hate Congress.
