A musical version of Ike Holter’s 2012 hit play “Hit the Wall” has been selected for a developmental series at the USC School of Dramatic Arts, it was announced Tuesday.
Part of LiveRead@SDA , “Hit the Wall,” featuring music by Charlotte Gaffey and Anna Waronker, with lyrics by Holter, Gaffey and Waronker, will receive a concert-style reading following a weeklong workshop residency. Ken Sawyer will direct.
Inspired by the 1969 Stonewall riots in New York, “Hit the Wall” premiered in a production by The Inconvenience at the Steppenwolf Garage Theatre. The show later opened off-Broadway, returned to Chicago for an encore run and has since received productions across the country.
Last year, Holter was among the winners of the Windham-Campbell Prizes, an annual award from Yale University that comes with a $165,000 grant. In 2014, Holter was named the Tribune’s Chicagoan of the Year in Theater.
