Diabetes often kills people before old age can because it damages the heart, blood vessels and kidneys. The alternative is life with blindness, amputations, peripheral neuropathy, heart and kidney disease. Lowering blood sugar by losing weight and exercising is the recommendation.

To the commenter who wants to get rid of pit bulls: What a harsh and cruel statement. There are no mean dogs. It’s how they’re brought up. Also, if you have pit bulls running loose in your neighborhood, obviously someone owned them and didn’t want to pay for the dogs’ food and care and let them loose. It’s not the dogs’ fault. I have many friends with wonderful pit bulls. I see people in the park walking their wonderful pit bulls. In areas where people let dogs loose to go starving and cold, I can see those dogs perhaps picking up an attitude. They’re animals that don’t know how to fend for themselves. There’s no mean breed, just mean people.

I’m sick and tired of the Democrats doing this and the Republicans doing that. They’re complaining like a bunch of school kids. Just work together and try to make America great. That’s what’s going to work.
In response to the writer wishing for the elimination of pit bulls: Your letter is full of hyperbole, misinformation and blatant untruths. The hysteria you attempt to whip up is misdirected and obviously based on an irrational bias that you harbor. There is nothing, I repeat, nothing wrong with American Staffordshire Terriers, other than a need for good, caring and conscientious owners. You lobby against the dog breed, instead of the uncaring and foolish owners who turn them loose on the communities once they are no longer puppies, or owner who no longer wish to feed them. What is needed, instead of a ban on the dogs, is the ban on idiot owners, and those that choose not to hold them accountable for their bad deeds and mistreatment of this dog breed. And where do you live where there are “pits” roaming the neighborhood in record numbers, running loose all over and mauling kids? Quit being so darned dramatic . . .
