The Lake Bluff Park District has announced it will receive a $350,000 grant from the state with the goal of making it easier to access the water from the park at Sunrise Park and Beach.

With the money, the Park District will solicit conceptual plans from designers on specific ways to improve the entrances, notably for people with disabilities, officials said.

It is not clear when construction would start, as the park board would have to review and subsequently approve whatever designs are presented, said Park District spokesman Jeff Spillman.

Voters approved a $3.1 million referendum in 2014 that replaced the stairs and improved the bathrooms at Sunrise Park, Spillman said, but noted there were other needs to be addressed.

“We are going to continue to build upon the improvements we made in 2014,” Spillman added.

Park District officials lauded the efforts of state Senator Julie Morrison, D-Deerfield, in landing the state grant.

“Sunrise Park and Beach is a special place and it is important that all individuals have an opportunity to experience its environment and shoreline,” Park District President Rob Douglass said in a statement.
