Running for office seminar for women

The YWCA Elgin and the League of Women Voters of the Elgin Area will host a workshop, “How to Run for Office — A Woman’s Focus,” from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 15 at the YWCA Elgin, 220 E. Chicago St.

The nonpartisan workshop is designed to provide women with knowledge to run for office and manage a campaign. Topics to be covered include how to circulate nomination petitions, organize a campaign message and find informational resources.

Lions Heritage Fest Run and Walk

Registration is under way for the Lions Heritage Fest 5K run and 1.6-mile walk along the Fox River.

The race will take place at 8 a.m. Sept. 15 through West Dundee and East Dundee. Registration is $30 for the 5K timed run and $20 for the 1.6-mile walk. Prices for the 5K run will increase after Sept. 1.

Proceeds from the race benefit Dundee Township and Elgin Lion Clubs’ charities, which include financial assistance for eyeglasses and helping the food bank. Participants are also encouraged to donate used eyeglasses or non-perishable food on race day.

The top three women and top three men will be awarded in various age groups for the run. An awards and post-race celebration will take place in the Heritage Fest Main Stage Tent in West Dundee.

Sheriff’s officers receive awards

Three Kane County Sheriff’s Office deputies and two corrections officers were recently honored with Life Saving Awards at the sheriff’s office Leadership Awards Ceremony.

Deputies Ryan Rojkowski, Ryan Wasson and Trevor Hoyt were recognized for helping save the lives of three people who overdosed on heroin in Elgin Township and Montgomery.

Also recognized were corrections officers Joseph Sceerey and Oliver Wilson, who received awards for helping save the life of an inmate at the Kane County Adult Justice Center who was attempting suicide.

Sheriff Donald Kramer hosted the July 23 ceremony, which also recognized 15 sheriff’s office employees for 20 years of service. Kramer also issued nine Meritorious Service Awards and three Leadership Awards.
