Shepard sophomore Joe Cinkus won the Arielle M. Terry Top Cadet Award at the Cadet Leadership Course at Scott Air Force Base earlier this summer.
Cinkus became the second Shepard student to win this award, which honors Arielle Terry, a former Shepard JROTC student who died from an illness in 2012 before graduating high school.
Criteria for the award include leadership, teamwork, diligence, and character. More than 140 students participated in the Cadet Leadership Course.
Instructors from the U.S. Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps program at Shepard High School accompanied Cinkus and fellow students Ernest Robinson, David Blanco, Meyah Sanchez, Ally Gillono, James Sanchez and Aidan Castor to the training course.
