Wehrli hosts town halls

State Rep. Grant Wehrli (R-Naperville) will host two town hall meetings in September.

The first is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, at the Naperville Municipal Building, 400 S. Eagle St. The second is scheduled at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, at Warrenville City Hall, 28W701 Stafford Place.

Wehrli will provide a short legislative session update, followed by a question and answer session about community topics. These could include the state budget, property taxes, pensions, education, recreational marijuana and transportation.

Author to speak at COD

In an effort to keep kids reading, best-selling author James Patterson will talk with area educators on Tuesday, Sept. 10, at College of DuPage.

The discussion will focus on getting and keeping kids reading. Patterson, a literacy advocate, has endowed more than 5,000 teacher education scholarships to universities around the country. He also has donated more than $40 million to literacy-focused initiatives.

The event is sponsored by McHenry-based Follett School Solutions and Follett Book Fairs, which has launched the “All Books for All Kids” initiative to expose students to a wide range of books.

Sept. 11 ceremony

A remembrance marking the 18th anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks is set for 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, at the Cmdr. Dan Shanower Memorial, behind the Naperville Municipal Center, 400 S. Eagle St.

The featured speaker will be Charles F. Johanns, who was co-chair of the Naperville 9/11 Shanower Memorial Commission and served for 10 years in the Army Reserves. The Naperville Municipal Band will perform and Mayor Steve Chirico will speak.

The Exchange Club of Naperville is sponsoring the remembrance ceremony. In case of rain, the event will move inside the municipal center.

Free wood chips available

Residents can pick up free wood chips from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, at the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County’s native plant nursery at the Blackwell Forest Preserve, 29W218 Mack Road, West Chicago.

Homeowners may bring vehicles no larger than a pickup truck to take the mulch and district employees will help fill trailers or truck beds. Those wanting smaller amounts should bring their own containers. Contractors are not allowed.

The forest preserve district makes its own mulch from dead trees and trimmings and uses it for trails and landscaping. Any excess mulch is available to the public.

COD programs in spotlight

The College of DuPage will showcase its culinary and hospitality programs from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, in the Culinary and Hospitality Center on its Glen Ellyn campus, 425 Fawell Blvd.

This event is free and open to the public.

There will be tours of the culinary and hospitality labs, and meetings with faculty to explore careers and salaries in a variety of fields, including baking and pastry arts, restaurant management, travel and tourism and event planning.

Police enforcement results

The Naperville Police Department arrested five people for impaired driving and issued 28 tickets for seat belt violations during its Labor Day enforcement campaign, according to a news release.

The department participated in the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign, which is administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation with federal funds and managed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
