Firefighters from Western Springs and other towns responded to a fire in a house Thursday morning.
Deputy Fire Chief Mike Kelly said someone called about 7 a.m. and reported smoke and fire from the house on the 4300 block of Grand Avenue.
When firefighters arrived, they saw smoke coming from the exterior of the home and found the fire on the second floor.
They forced open the front door to get inside, Kelly said.
Western Springs called for assistance and the La Grange, Hinsdale, Clarendon Hills, Westmont, Oak Brook, La Grange Park and Pleasantview fire departments responded.
A neighbor said he saw flames coming from the rear of the house, which was unoccupied.
The house, which has a preservation award plaque on the front from the Western Springs Historical Society and a sign indicating it was built in 1901, was being renovated and no one was living in the home, the neighbor said.
The fire was brought under control quickly and no injuries were reported, Kelly said.
The fire was confined to a rear room on the second floor and did not spread to the third floor, Kelly said, but there was smoke and water damage on the first two floors.
The cause is being investigated, but Kelly said it appears to have been accidental.
