A La Grange Park restaurant reopened after firefighters extinguished a roof fire Saturday afternoon.

The La Grange Park Fire Department reported a fire started at Bill’s Place, while the restaurant was open and roofing contractors were using a torch on the roof.

Firefighters saw light smoke in the building, at 1146 N. Maple Ave., when they responded to the fire alarm that activated at 1:02 p.m. Oct. 10, La Grange Park Fire Chief Dean Maggos said.

The roofers thought they had put out the fire, but the fire department’s thermal imaging cameras showed the fire still was burning between layers of the roof.

All the customers and employees safely evacuated the restaurant, Maggos said in a statement. No injuries were reported.

Firefighters opened up sections of the roof to reach the fire and put it out with multiple water fire extinguishers, Maggos said. They also covered the restaurant counters and equipment with tarps to prevent water damage. Brookfield firefighters responded to help the La Grange Park Fire Department.

Staff from the village’s building department checked the restaurant and it was able to reopen Saturday after the fire. Repairs were estimated to cost $3,000, Maggos said.
