A man was found dead in the Main Branch of the Chicago River downtown Thursday morning, according to police.

The man’s body was found just before 8 a.m. near the 400 block of East River Drive on the Near North Side after a witness saw something in the water and called 911.

The body was retrieved by the Fire Department and the police marine unit. The identity of the man was not immediately known, according to police spokesperson Kellie Bartoli.

Area Three detectives were conducting a death investigation.
