Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Over the last few decades, there have been several handheld gaming devices, but none have been as popular as Nintendo’s Switch. In fact, it’s so popular that it’s on track in 2021 to surpass the sales record of Sony’s PlayStation 3 console. The company is steadily approaching the 90 million units mark, reaching the milestone in only 4 years.

As with anything handheld or great for taking on the road, it needs protection. There are plenty of Switch cases and screen protectors available, but if you want to add some flair to your devices, there’s no better way than slapping a sleek Nintendo Switch skin on it.

What to know before you buy a Nintendo Switch skin

Surface coverage

It might seem like all Switch skins are the same, but there are actually slight differences between them. It might not be immediately obvious, but once you know to look for it will be much easier to decide.

By nature of their design, Nintendo Switch skins cover the console, controller and docking stations, but skins have different surface coverage on those pieces. Some skin parts don’t cover the entire controller, while some only cover the top and sides of the dock.

Forms of protection

Applying a skin to a Nintendo Switch console can protect it from dust, light scratches and small water droplets. However, a Switch skin won’t protect it from falls, bumps or hard knocks. It also doesn’t make the Switch waterproof.

Nintendo Switch skin features

Material

Since it’s extremely malleable, almost all Nintendo Switch skins are made from PVC, also known as vinyl. It’s a material that can easily be printed on, is scratch-resistant and reusable. Most importantly, it’s cheap to manufacture, making Switch skins extremely affordable.

Ease of application

Switch skins have a thin adhesive layer on the back, which allows them to stick to the Switch console. It isn’t a permanent adhesive, so the skin can easily be peeled off and reapplied. It also doesn’t leave a residue behind.

Vibrant detail

Vinyl is an excellent substance to print on, which is why designs are vibrant in color and rich with detail. The printing process on vinyl is extremely accurate, making sure the skins fit perfectly on the Switch.

Nintendo Switch skin cost

A Nintendo Switch skin is an affordable way to protect your device and give it some extra visual appeal. Since the material used is inexpensive, the average cost of a Switch skin ranges from $10 for just the skin to $30 for a skin that includes a case and dock.

Nintendo Switch skin FAQ

Can I apply Nintendo Switch skins myself?

A. Yes, you can stick the skins on yourself. You need a steady hand, as it can take a couple of tries to get it on straight. Luckily, skins can easily be removed and adjusted.

Are Nintendo Switch skins safe to use?

A. Yes, they are; however, when the Switch was first released, a well-known skins brand experienced issues with their adhesive backing. This damaged the outer coating of Switch devices, leaving horrible marks. The company has since changed its adhesive material, and it no longer poses a threat. There have been no further reports of damaged Switch devices.
