A Third Lake-area man was reported in very critical condition after his ATV broke though the ice on Druce Lake Wednesday afternoon, the Lake County sheriff’s office said.

Police said they were alerted to the incident just after 4 p.m., and saw the man go under the water just as officers arrived.

Authorities borrowed a rowboat from a resident to reach the area near the center of the lake where the man was last seen. A fire department diver arrived, and he was directed to the spot.

The diver found the man about six feet under water and tied a rope to him. First responders were able to haul the man to shore, police said.

The man, 62, was not breathing. Authorities performed CPR until paramedics arrived and transported the man to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

Police said the man, who lives near the lake, was riding an ATV near the center of the lake when the rear of the vehicle broke through the ice. A moment later, police said, the vehicle and the man sank into the lake.

Although initial reports indicated more than one person was in the water, the man was the sole person on the ATV, police said.
