The city of Aurora has begun its annual water main flushing program, which will run through mid-August.

In order to remove sediments that may have accumulated in pipes, the city conducts the annual program in designated areas on a rotation throughout the municipality, city officials said.

This summer, the general hydrant flushing areas are east of North Broadway and west of Eola Road and then north of New York Street to Bilter Road from Eola Road to North Farnsworth; and north of the Burlington Northern/Metra railroad tracks from Farnsworth Avenue to North Broadway.

A map with specific flushing dates is available at www.aurora-il.org/WatermainFlushing.

Signs will be posted in neighborhoods a couple of days before flushing begins in a specific area, according to city officials.

Hydrant flushing will occur on weekdays between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. To minimize issues for the designated areas, residents are encouraged to wash clothes before 7 a.m. or after 6 p.m., not wash clothes or run a dishwasher during or immediately after flushing takes place nearby, and to stop water use if discoloration is noticed.

If discoloration is seen, city officials said residents should turn on cold water faucets such as an outside spigot or bathtub until the water clears in a few minutes.

If laundry becomes stained from discolored water, a free bottle of liquid polymer laundry aide, which helps remove stains, is available for free from the city of Aurora by calling 630-256-4636.
