A man who sexually assaulted an acquaintance in 2020 has been sentenced to 16 years in prison, Lake County prosecutors said Tuesday.

Andres Leyva, 31, was found guilty in May of aggravated criminal sexual assault and criminal sexual assault. Judge Patricia Fix on Monday sentenced Leyva to consecutive prison terms of 10 years and six years on the two felony convictions.

He was arrested by sheriff’s officers in September 2020 after the victim met with police and reported that she had been assaulted by Leyva at a residence in Third Lake. Detectives went to the residence, collected evidence and then placed Leyva in custody.

He has been in the Lake County jail since then, held in lieu of $300,000 bond.

At Monday’s sentencing, prosecutors asked for a lengthy sentence, arguing that Leyva was at high risk to reoffend if given a lighter term. They also said Leyva had not accepted responsibility for his actions against the victim.

“This offender will spend a significant amount of time in custody because of the bravery of the survivor, the investigation by the sheriff’s department, and the hard work of our prosecutors and victim specialists,” State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart said in a statement released Tuesday.

Leyva will serve his sentence at 85%, with credit for about two years spent in custody.
