Lake County authorities Tuesday identified a Zion man who died Friday in a fire at his apartment as Christopher Pienta.
The coroner’s office said Tuesday that he died from smoke inhalation and fire-related injuries. Pienta, 68, was pronounced dead at Vista East Medical Center in Waukegan Friday evening.
Zion fire and rescue personnel were called at about 6:45 p.m. Friday for reports of an activated fire alarm in an apartment building in the 4200 block of White Pine Lane. Firefighters encountered heavy smoke in the unit with the active and blaze and found Pienta inside, the coroner’s office said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Illinois State Fire Marshal, the Zion Fire and Rescue Department and the Newport Township Fire Protection District.
