
Foundation donates $40K to Elgin’s Boys and Girls Club
Nicor Gas Foundation has donated $40,000 to support expanded workforce development programming at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Elgin.
The funding is to be used for programs that introduce club members to career opportunities in STEM and energy-related industries, according to a news release.
The Boys and Girls Club of Elgin serves about 1,800 youths from Aurora, Elgin, Hanover Park, Schaumburg, South Elgin and Streamwood at its three clubhouses and more than 30 school-based programs.

Free tickets available for U.S. Air Force Band concert
Free tickets are available for the U.S. Air Force Band of Mid-America Veterans Day-themed concert being held at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, in the Blizzard Theatre at Elgin Community College, 1700 Spartan Drive.
The performance will feature the 45-member concert band as they honor veterans and share stories of their sacrifices, a news release said. The music will include marches, patriotic songs, Broadway tunes and orchestral numbers.

Dundee Library seeking pix for Day of Dead ofrenda
The Dundee Library is collecting photos to display on its ofrenda, a traditional Mexican altar displayed for the Day of the Dead.
The public is welcome to send photos of departed loved ones to the library by Saturday, Oct. 21, according to the library’s newsletter. Photos can be emailed as jpegs to libraryhelp@frvpld.info with the subject “Day of the Dead” in the header.
Staff at the information desk also will make photocopies of pictures brought to the library to be included on the altar.
The ofrenda will be on display from Wednesday, Oct. 25, through Wednesday, Nov. 8 on the main level of the 555 Barrington Ave. library in East Dundee.

West African kora concert at St. Charles library
The St. Charles Public Library will present a concert by Sean Gaskell featuring the music of the West African kora at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12, in the Carnegie Community Room.
Gaskell performs songs on the kora, a 21-stringed West African harp. As a student of the instrument, he studied under two musicians at their homes in Brikama, Gambia, library officials said.
The free concert is open to the public. The library is 1 S. Sixth Ave.
