A person of interest was being questioned after a 35-year-old woman was fatally wounded early Thursday morning in a shooting on the Northwest Side, Chicago police said.

Shortly before 5 a.m., a woman suffered a gunshot wound to the chest in the 5800 block of West Newport Avenue and was initially taken in critical condition to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center where she later was pronounced dead.

The circumstances leading up to the shooting were under investigation and detectives were questioning a person of interest.

Earlier Thursday morning, another woman was found unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the head in the East Pilsen neighborhood in the 1300 block of South Ruble Street, police said. That shooting happened about 3:40 a.m. and the 40-year-old woman was taken to Stroger Hospital where she was listed in critical condition, police said.

No one was in custody and detectives were investigating.
