Two Chicago men were arrested in connection to a 2022 armed robbery of a U.S. Postal Service letter carrier in Hinsdale as well as financial crimes related to several mail theft incidents in Hinsdale and Oak Brook, according to the Chicago Division of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.
A news release from the agency stated Antwan Kelsor, 22, was arrested May 9 by Chicago police and Maurice Deloach, 23, was arrested May 12 by Hinsdale police and postal inspectors. Both men are facing charges from the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office including four felony counts of identity theft, three felony counts of conspiracy to defraud financial institutions and two felony counts of financial institution fraud.
Kelsor also was charged with two felony counts of armed robbery with a firearm.
The Postal Inspection Service had offered a reward of up to $25,000 for information following the May 9, 2022, robbery at the intersection of West Hinsdale Avenue and South Stough Street.
According to a news release from DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin, the mail carrier was emptying mail from the USPS collection box just after 1 p.m. at the intersection of Hinsdale Avenue and Stough Street when a man approached him, held a handgun to his side, and took his key, which opened collection boxes in Hinsdale, Oak Brook, Burr Ridge and part of Willowbrook. In the following weeks, mail thefts occurred in Hinsdale and Oak Brook collection boxes using the key allegedly stolen from the mail carrier.
The letter carrier was not injured in the robbery, officials said.
In the investigation, police said they recovered mail and checks stolen from USPS collection boxes and from businesses and residents with addresses in Hinsdale, Oak Brook, Clarendon Hills, Westmont, Willowbrook, Westchester, Western Springs, Barrington, Addison, Palos Hills, Oak Lawn, Chicago and Forest View. The monetary value of the checks recovered during the investigation totaled approximately $508,714, police said.
The investigation and arrests were conducted through a partnership with the Hinsdale Police Department, Oak Brook Police Department, Chicago Police Department, and the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, according to the news releases.
