A Cook County judge ordered a man to remain in custody Monday morning after the man allegedly shot and killed his daughter-in-law following a wedding in Schaumburg Friday night.

Roland Schmidt, 76, of Stillman Valley near Rockford, was taken into custody by Schaumburg police after the department responded to a report of a shooting at 50 N. Martingale Road about 10:15 p.m. Schmidt and his daughter-in-law, Christine Moyer, 45 of Galena, Ohio, were in the parking lot of the Marriott hotel at the address when the shooting happened.

Moyer suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was transported to a local hospital where she later died, police said. A firearm was recovered from the scene.

An investigation by police determined that Moyer and Schmidt were both attending a wedding at the hotel. Schmidt followed Moyer outside as she left the event and shot her in the head. Schmidt was upset with Moyer over her filing divorce paperwork against his son, police said.

According to court documents, Moyer and her husband, Schmidt’s son, were married for 16 years with two children, and Moyer served her husband with divorce papers July 8. Moyer and her husband were in town for his cousin’s wedding and left alongside her mother-in-law, sister-in-law and her sister-in-law’s husband. Schmidt allegedly walked with the group outside the hotel, where he had a room, and shot Moyer in the back of the head as she walked to her car.

Moyer’s sister-in-law and her sister-in-law’s husband disarmed Schmidt along with an unrelated witness outside the hotel and an off-duty police officer. Court documents say there were no fights, arguments or conversations about the divorce at the wedding. Schmidt allegedly told police he planned the shooting last week and intended to kill himself afterward.

Schmidt was ordered to remain in custody at a detention hearing in Rolling Meadows Monday. His next court date is Aug. 22.
