Naper Settlement receives $500,000 state grant for new programs

Naper Settlement will use a $500,000 state grant to provide new STEM and humanities programs for various ages.

The funding will create the Golden Days Senior Programs, Camp New Horizons, Regional Institute for Teacher Education and Field Trip Connect, which are part of the settlement’s initiative to blend STEM subjects with history.

Golden Days Senior Program will give seniors access to the historic museum campus to support their mental wellbeing and combat isolation, said Jessica Toran, the settlement’s director of education. Some of the programs will include guided walks, bird watching, gardening and memory sharing.

Golden Days, which will help transform the settlement into a social hub for seniors, will pilot in late fall and be fully set up in 2026.

The grant also will fund Camp New Horizons, allowing children facing housing insecurity to participate in camp experiences. Starting next year, the program also will provide transportation to and from the settlement.

Money is also earmarked for professional teacher development in such topics as the environment, Native American history and America 250, which commemorates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 2026.

Another program, Field Trip Connect, will help low-income students pay for field trips and transportation to Naper Settlement.
