National Weather Service officials called an air quality alert Friday in effect until midnight as well as a beach hazard warning.

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency issued an Air Pollution Action Day Friday for all of Illinois due to Canadian wildfire smoke. The agency determined that widespread ozone and particulate levels are expected to be unhealthy for children and adults that fall in sensitive groups.

Air quality alerts issued across Illinois as Chicago ranks worst in the world. But how safe are you inside your home?

Weather officials also warned of dangerous swimming conditions including high waves and dangerous currents at Lake Michigan beaches. The warning is for beaches in Lake County, northern and central Cook counties in Illinois, and Lake and Porter counties in Indiana.

The beach hazard was set to expire at 4 p.m. Friday, officials said.

Current afternoon conditions at O’Hare International Airport are partly cloudy at 74 degrees. At Midway Airport, conditions are a few clouds at 76 degrees.

On Friday, temperatures are expected to remain in the low 70s.
