Kane Forest District offers program on canal

The Forest Preserve District of Kane County will hold a program called “The I&M Canal – Connecting Illinois Farms to the Nation and the World,” from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, at the Barbara Belding Lodge within Brewster Creek Forest Preserve at 6N921 Route 25 in St. Charles.

During the program, Norm Moline, a historical geographer with experience in historic preservation, will recount the history of the Illinois and Michigan Canal, and its designation in 1984 as the nation’s first National Heritage Area.

The I&M Canal opened in 1848, and helped spur the development of Illinois, according to a press release about the program. Connecting the Illinois River and Mississippi River watersheds with the Great Lakes, the canal allowed the transport of products to distant places and dramatically expanded the link between farms and cities, the release stated.

The program, for those 18 years old and older, is sponsored by the Forest Preserve District of Kane County, the St. Charles Park District and the Geneva Park District. The fee is $10 per person. Advance registration is required, organizers said. To register, go to www.kaneforest.com/register, call 630-444-3190 or email programs@kaneforest.com.
