Carpentersville hosting 9/11 Patriot Day remembrance
Carpentersville will hold a Patriot Day ceremony at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, outside Fire Station No. 91 at 213 Spring St.
To honor the lives lost during the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, 403 U.S. flags will be displayed at Station 91, along Spring Street and throughout Riverfront Park, according to the village’s social media pages.
The ceremony will include a presentation of colors by a local honor guard, playing of the National Anthem and an invocation from the Rev. Phil Zilinski. Village President John Skillman and Fire Chief William Anaszewicz are scheduled to speak.
Hanover Township health, wellness expo set for Thursday
Hanover Township will host its 18th annual “Just for the Health of It” community health and wellness expo from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, at the William Tiknis Campus, 240 S. Route 59, Bartlett.
Free and open to the public, the event gives township residents a chance to take advantage of complimentary health screenings for blood pressure, hearing, cholesterol and glucose and to learn about available local health resources, according to a news release. The expo will also have a kids’ zone featuring a petting zoo and bouncy castle.

Jane Barbosa Legacy Brunch being held Friday at ECC
To launch Latinx Heritage Month, Elgin Community College is hosting a brunch honoring the legacy of Jane Barbosa from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 12, in the Jobe Lounge in Building B on the 1700 Spartan Drive campus.
Barbosa died in 2021 at the age of 75. She had been involved with the National Council of La Raza and was president of the Illinois Migrant Council, according to her online obituary. She spent almost 20 years at Elgin Community College as a recruiter and minority affairs coordinator and helped found ECC’s Organization of Latin American Students and an annual Latino Heritage Breakfast
Rey Wences, senior director of deportation defense for the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, will speak. Tickets are $30 for students and $50 for the general public. Funds raised will support the We Rise Jane Barbosa Scholarship.

St. Edward HS plans Day of Remembrance Ceremony
St. Edward Central Catholic HIgh School’s Day of Remembrance Ceremony, open to the public and all first responders, veterans and active duty military members, will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12, on Greg True Field, 335 Locust St., Elgin.
The event will honor the lives lost during the terrorist attacks on the U.S. on Sept. 11, 2001 and those who serve and protect local communities and the nation, according to a news release.
Special guests will include Elgin Police Chief Ana Lalley; Elgin City Council members; Jerry Paulsen, a veteran, former law enforcement officer, ambassador of Goodwill to Guam and Paulsen Group CEO; a Gold Star family; and the American Legion Post 57 honor guard. Music will be provided by Dundee Scottish Bagpipes.

Dundee Township Park District holding benefit breakfast
Dundee Township Park District’s pancake breakfast to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association will be held from 8 to 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 12, in the Adult Activities Center at the Rakow Center, 665 Barrington Ave., Carpentersville.
The park district is partnering with the Carpentersville Police Department, Carpentersville Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 4790 and the Algonquin Police Department on the event.
