Geneva firefighters have a new union contract.
The Geneva City Council last week approved a four-year collective bargaining agreement with the Geneva Professional Firefighters Association Local 4287 that extends from 2024 through 2028. Included in the contract are 3.15% annual raises for firefighters and 2.65% raises for lieutenants.
The union represents firefighters and lieutenants who are part of the Geneva Fire Department, per the new contract. It does not represent, for example, employees with designations of captain, deputy chief or fire chief or civilian employees of the department.
The yearly raises are meant to be market-rate adjustments, and the contract notes that wage increases will be given retroactively, but only to those who were active union members at the time of the contract’s ratification.
Their last contract, for comparison, set 2.5% annual raises for firefighters and lieutenants.
At the Sept. 2 City Council meeting, Geneva Assistant City Administrator Benjamin McCready reiterated that the compensation adjustments will be applied retroactively. McCready also pointed to other changes in the agreement, like the creation of an apprenticeship program.
The new union contract approved by the Geneva City Council extends from May 1, 2024, through April 30, 2028.
