Memorial service for Children’s Theatre of Elgin cofounder

A memorial service for Peter Akemann, cofounder of the Children’s Theatre of Elgin, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, at Journey of Hope in Elgin.

Akemann died Sept. 21 after battling cancer for three and a half years, according to his online obituary. He was 73.

Akemann and his twin brother, David, co-founded Children’s Theatre of Elgin and Fox Valley Youth Theatre in 1988. He produced and directed dozens of shows during the 30 years he served on the organization’s board, many as its president, his obituary said.

He graduated from Elgin High School in 1969, Elgin Community College in 1971, Brigham Young University in 1972 and completed a master’s degree at Northwestern University’s Garrett Theological Seminary in 1973.

For 44 years, Akemann served as pastor of the Congregational Church of Lily Lake.

Akemann served on the Elgin Community College Board of Trustees for 12 years and was chairman of ECC’s building committee when the school’s Visual and Performing Arts Center was built. For 18 years, he was an arbitrator for the Illinois Industrial Commission Workmen’s Compensation.

Akemann and his wife, Donna, were married for 52 years and raised four children.

‘Lilo & Stitch’ to be shown Friday outside Dolphin Cove

Dundee Township Park District is screening the movie “Lilo & Stitch” at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, in the parking lot of the Dolphin Cove Family Aquatic Center, 300 N, Kennedy Drive, Carpentersville.

Tickets are $15 per car for Dundee Township residents and $20 per car for nonresidents.

The live action remake of the 2002 animated feature brought in more than $1 billion worldwide at the box office, according to published reports. The movie centers on a rambunctious space alien and his friendship with a Hawaiian girl being raised by her older sister.

Carpentersville, South Elgin fire stations holding open houses

Carpentersville Fire Department and the South Elgin Fire District are both holding open houses from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4.

The Carpentersville event will celebrate the 110th anniversary of the founding of the fire department, according to the village’s website. It will be held at Station 93, 5000 Sleepy Hollow Road, Carpentersville.

It will include fire truck tours, antique fire engines, a fire pole and gear-up station, hose target practice, CPR and “stop the bleed” demonstrations, a firefighter fashion show, kids coloring station and adoptable dogs. For more information, call 847-426-2131.
