Geneva’s Natural Resources Committee will spotlight sandhill cranes during its next lecture series presentation at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Geneva Public Library, 227 S. Seventh St. in Geneva.

At the event, the Kane County Forest Preserve District will share information on sandhill cranes, which are well-known for their distinctive calls and can be frequently seen in the area during the spring and fall migration seasons, according to a press release about the presentation.

History hike scheduled in Oswego

A history hike is set to begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, at Waa Kee Sha Park at 4700 Reservation Road in Oswego.

Waa Kee Sha Park and the surrounding area have been more than just a recreation site since even before the first settlers arrived, event organizers said in a press release.

During the event on Oct. 11, Little White School Museum Coordinator Joe Noce will lead visitors on a hike along the trails of Waa Kee Sha to explore its rich history, the release said.

Participants will meet at Waa Kee Sha’s first parking area after entering the park. The hike will cover approximately half a mile and last about two hours, organizers said.

Forum on higher education to be held at Waubonsee Community College

Waubonsee Community College President Brian Knetl is inviting students, alumni, faculty, staff and community members to be part of an in-person conversation on Oct. 10 about the future of higher education.

The event, titled “Understanding the Higher Education Landscape,” will be held from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 10, in the Academic and Professional Center at Waubonsee’s Sugar Grove campus at Route 47 and Waubonsee Drive, according to a press release from the college.

The free forum will offer a chance to connect face-to-face with Knetl and fellow attendees, event organizers said

The event is designed to give those attending a deeper understanding of national educational trends, public perceptions and expectations, shifting student needs and the vital role of community colleges, according to the release.

Spooky events being held at Fox River Trolley Museum

The Fox River Trolley Museum is holding ghost story train rides on Oct. 11, 18 and 25 at its 365 S. LaFox St. location in South Elgin.

Ghost story train rides are family-friendly and suitable for all ages. They will be offered at 5, 6:15 and 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 per person.

North Central College kicking off its theater season

North Central College Department of Theatre’s 2025-26 season will kick off with “The Musical of Musicals: The Musical” at the Theatre at Meiley-Swallow Hall, 31 S. Ellsworth St. in Naperville.

Performances are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Oct. 9-10; 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11; and 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12.

“The Moors” will be staged from Oct. 30 to Nov. 2 at the Madden Theatre, 171 Chicago Ave. in Naperville. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Oct. 30 and 31, 2 and 7 p.m. Nov. 1 and at 2 p.m. Nov. 2.

Tickets for both shows are $14.
