The Glenview Public Library’s next chapter includes more study rooms, more children’s place space and a vending cafe with fresh food. Renovations on the projects recently got underway.
The $1.756 million project, approved by the Glenview Library Board in July, kicked off Sept. 16, with work expected to continue through early 2026 in three phases.
The new additions were developed following a space needs assessment in 2023 and input received from a 2024 community survey in which 1,071 residents participated, the library said.
When complete, the project will add:
• Seven new study rooms for one to two people on the north side of the second floor. These rooms will help address demand for study spaces, as more than 700 reservations are made each month for the nine existing rooms, the library said. The rooms are expected to be available early next year.
• A redesigned play space in Children’s Services with play features aimed at nurturing cognitive growth in children. These additions will create “a vibrant, interactive space where books and play come together to spark creativity and discovery,” Executive Library Director Lindsey Dorfman said.
• A small vending cafe area in the lobby in which the library partners with a local coffee shop. It will feature hot and cold coffee drinks, new vending machines with fresh food and expanded soft seating.
Work began in September on the vending cafe, with the play space additions to begin this month, the library said. Both are slated for completion in December.
The bulk of the project’s cost will be funded through library reserves, with additional support from a $70,000 grant from the Illinois Public Library Construction Grant program and funds raised by the nonprofit Glenview Public Library Foundation.
The 85,000 square-foot Glenview Public Library building, at 1930 Glenview Road, was completed in 2010. Since then, library usage has undergone changes, prompting this year’s renovations, Dorfman said.
“When the library was built, the emphasis was largely on quiet study, access to books and materials, and larger meeting spaces,” she said. “Those remain important parts of who we are, but how people use the library has expanded in so many ways.”
Dorfman explained that many parents now bring young children for hands-on play in addition to storytimes, and more professionals and students are vying for private spaces for study, meetings and projects.
The update of the children’s area will feature four mobile play structures, including a play kitchen, puppet theatre and performance stage. The space will also include new LEGO, train and light tables for hands-on exploration, the library said.
These new additions will replace older LEGO, train and activity tables, said Kathleen Mammoser, library communications specialist.
The total cost of the play space is $617,757, with the Glenview Public Library Foundation raising $200,000 toward that amount, Mammoser said.
“And we see neighbors looking for a comfortable spot to meet a friend over coffee or simply enjoy being part of a welcoming community space,” Dorfman added.
“These new additions ensure the library is not only a place for books and research, but also a dynamic hub for connection, learning and discovery for people of all ages.”
The library continues to “pay close attention” to how the building is used and where needs may arise, said Hilary Gabel, communications director for the library.
“Needs change over time, and part of our responsibility is to stay responsive so the library continues to serve Glenview in the best way possible,” she said.
“We are always listening and looking for ways to better serve our community.”
