The Will County sheriff’s office says it is continuing to investigate a shooting that left one man dead and a pregnant woman critically injured in Crete Township Sept. 2, pursuing numerous leads. No one is in custody.

“The Will County Sheriff’s Office understands the concern this tragic act of violence has caused within the community. Our thoughts remain with the victims and their families during this incredibly difficult time,” the office said in a statement Wednesday.

Police confirmed the man who died was 23-year-old Angel Torres-Lopez but would not name the 25-year-old female driver of the black sedan, found with shattered windows and multiple bullet holes on the 2300 block of East Exchange Street on Sept. 2.

Torres-Lopez, struck in the hip and buttock, died after deputies provided aid and medical personnel transported both victims to a nearby hospital. The female driver was found with gunshot wounds to the head and a hand and remains in critical but stable condition, the sheriff’s office said.

A preliminary search of the surrounding area revealed about 40 shell casings, police said.

“The Will County Sheriff’s Office is committed to bringing those responsible to justice and will provide additional updates as information becomes available,” police said.
