This week, National Guard troops from Illinois and Texas were deployed to the Chicago area to protect U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement personnel, other federal authorities and federal property. President Donald Trump also called for Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker to be jailed for “failing to protect Ice Officers.” Meanwhile, a federal judge found that ICE repeatedly violated a nationwide consent decree by making “warrantless arrests” amid its immigration crackdown.
In a separate ruling Thursday, a federal judge issued a temporary restraining order barring the Trump administration from deploying federalized National Guard troops from any state to Illinois. In her oral ruling from the bench, U.S. District Judge April Perry said that allowing the National Guard to come into Chicago “will only add fuel to the fire that the defendants themselves have started.”
After weeks of diplomatic efforts from the United States and its Arab allies, a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas went into effect Friday, hours after Israel’s Cabinet approved a deal to pause the fighting in Gaza and release Palestinian prisoners in exchange for the remaining hostages. U.S. officials also announced they would send about 200 troops to Israel to help support and monitor the ceasefire deal.
Stateside, the federal government shutdown entered its second week. No negotiations between Republicans and Democrats to reopen the government appear to be underway, as the White House budget office announced that mass firings of federal workers have begun.
Staffing issues as a result of the shutdown have caused flight delays at airports nationwide, including a ground delay at O’Hare International Airport on Tuesday. In other transportation news this week, the Chicago Transit Authority reiterated it is “fully and entirely committed” to completing the Red Line Extension despite the project’s recent federal funding freeze, and Metra is proposing fare increases starting next year.
Metra is also testing a prototype Café Car, local photographer Tonika Lewis Johnson was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship and country music legend Dolly Parton cleared up concerns about her health.
For the third time this postseason, the Chicago Cubs staved off elimination. The team beat the Brewers 6-0 Thursday night at Wrigley Field, forcing a win-or-go-home Game 5. The Cubs must travel back to Milwaukee and win Saturday night in order to advance to the National League Championship Series.
Plus, the Chicago Marathon is this Sunday! The race starts at 7:20 a.m. in Grant Park, passing through 29 of the city’s neighborhoods along its 26.2-mile route. For everything you need to know, check out our marathon guide, here.
