A driver was pronounced dead late Tuesday night after a SUV that had been reported carjacked crashed into a tree in the Garfield Park neighborhood.

Chicago police said shortly before 11:30 p.m., officers responded to a crash in the 2800 block of West Van Buren Street where a SUV headed west jumped a curb and slammed into a tree. A male driver was found unresponsive inside of the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A preliminary investigation revealed the silver SUV was taken during a carjacking about 11:20 p.m. in the 4200 block of South Artesian Avenue in the Brighton Park neighborhood.

Detectives were investigating.
