An elderly man was struck by a car and killed while crossing a major intersection in Morton Grove early Friday morning, according to police.

According to a Morton Grove Police Department news release, police responded just after 6 a.m. to the 6800 block of Dempster Street in the north suburb on a call of a vehicle striking a pedestrian. Shortly after emergency responders arrived on the scene, the man crossing the street was transported “with serious injuries” to Lutheran General Hospital in nearby Park Ridge.

He was pronounced dead a short time later. Authorities identified him as Boris Nudelman, 89, of the 8900 block of Bronx Avenue in Skokie.

The release explains that the driver of a Volkswagen Jetta was traveling east on Dempster Street then struck Nudelman, who was walking south near the 6800 block and was crossing Dempster.

Police state in the release that the driver is cooperating with investigators. The investigation in ongoing by the Morton Grove Police Department with the assistance of the NORTAF Major Crash Assistance Team.

Citations or criminal charges, if any, would come following the investigation, according to the release.
