A 16-year-old was shot on Thursday evening on Aurora’s far East Side, the Aurora Police Department said on Friday.

Just before 5:50 p.m. on Thursday, officers responded to the 2800 block of Village Green Drive after Aurora police received reports of a gunshot victim near a park where children were playing, according to a news release from the police department.

Upon arrival, officers found a 16-year-old with a gunshot wound to a lower extremity, the news release said. The teen was taken to a nearby hospital and is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Specialized units like the department’s K-9 Unit, Special Operations Group, Community Oriented Policing Unit and Special Response Team responded to the scene to assist with securing the area and searching for those involved, according to the release.

Detectives from the department’s Investigations Bureau also responded to the scene and began investigating the circumstances of the incident, per the release. Evidence technicians also responded to identify and collect forensic evidence, according to police.

The investigation into the shooting remains active, according to the release.
