A home in Aurora was declared uninhabitable following a structure fire early Thursday morning, according to the Aurora Fire Department.
At around 1:49 a.m., the fire department responded to the 400 block of Grant Place for a reported structure fire, according to a news release from the department. An Aurora police officer on patrol had spotted flames coming from the home’s attic, the release said.
Aurora police officers started evacuating the 2½-story home, which had been converted into three separate units, the news release said.
Two residents and their two dogs were escorted out, per the fire department.
Responding fire crews found active fire coming from the second floor and the attic at the rear of the building, so the response was upgraded to a second alarm as firefighters brought hose lines to the second floor, conducted searches and began vertical ventilation on the roof, the release said.
A total of five engine companies, three truck companies, two medic units and three chief officers, making 28 personnel in total, responded to the scene, according to the release.
The home was ultimately declared uninhabitable due to smoke, fire and water damage, the department said, and the Red Cross and Victim Services assisted the displaced tenants with finding temporary shelter. No civilian, police or firefighter injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by Aurora Fire Department, the release said.
