Veterans Day events planned for Elgin area Tuesday

Veterans Day ceremonies are being held in the Elgin area on Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 10-11:

  • Elgin and American Legion Post 57 will honor the military with an event at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Heritage Ballroom of the Edward Schock Centre of Elgin, 100 Symphony Way. Post Cmdr. Dennis Beach and Senior Vice Cmdr. Carol “Gunny” Fowler will speak and the post’s Color Guard will present colors.
  • Carpentersville’s commemoration will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Veterans Garden in Carpenter Park, 275 Maple Ave. The Rev. Phil Zilinski, pastor of Fox Valley Baptist Church, will give an invocation, followed by remarks from Village President John Skillman. Colors will be presented by the Carpentersville Police and Fire Department Honor Guard; Aria Ramey will sing the National Anthem; a wreath will be laid; and taps will be performed by Dundee Crown High School Band member Josmar Teran Macias.
  • South Elgin’s ceremony will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the Veterans Plaza outside at the Public Safety Center, 50 N. Water St.
  • Dundee Township Park District will hold an event at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 10, at the Rakow Adult Activities Center, 665 Barrington Ave., Carpentersville. It will include a flag ceremony, speaker and light refreshments.

Barrels of Hope fundraiser to benefit PADS of Elgin

A Barrels of Hope benefit to raise money for PADS of Elgin will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, at The Distance Social, 314 N. River St., East Dundee.

The night will include bourbon samples from more than a dozen top-shelf distilleries, food from Duke’s Blues-N-BBQ and a raffle, according to the event webpage.

PADS provides shelter, support services and advocacy for people and families experiencing homelessness.

Carpentersville receives holiday grant from ComEd

Carpentersville is one of 25 communities in northern Illinois to receive a $2,500 ComEd “Powering the Holidays” grant.

The money will be used to add new light features and an interactive photo frame at Triangle Park. They will be on display during the village’s Winterville in the Park fest planned for 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, a social media post said.

Since 2021, ComEd has distributed $234,000 in grants to more than 90 communities and organizations to transform public spaces into holiday displays.

Elgin museum hosting Indigenous Peoples Month event

The Elgin Public Museum holding a free Indigenous Peoples Month event from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15.

HoChunk Native American Gerald Savage will give an Illinois Humanities Road Scholars presentation on Native Americans in Illinois. There also will be flintknapping demonstrations by archaeology professor Ken Geier and related activities and exhibits, a social media post said.

Apprenticeship Expo being held Thursday at ECC

Elgin Community College will host its third Apprenticeship Exposition from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday, Nov. 20, in the Building E dining room on the school’s 1700 Spartan Drive campus.

The expo will bring together businesses, workforce development partners and education providers from across the region, according to a news release. The event is free and open to the general public.

Attendees can learn about the “Earn While You Learn” apprenticeship model, which combines paid, hands-on experience with classroom instruction to help participants earn credentials. The expo will also offer opportunities to connect directly with employers, union representatives and education providers offering apprenticeship and pre-apprenticeship programs across a wide range of industries.

ECC partners with local employers to offer Department of Labor registered apprenticeships for nurse assistants, computer numerical control, culinary arts, HVAC, industrial maintenance technology, and firefighter and paramedic positions.
