Sips of the Season insulated cups being sold by DNA

Insulated cups are being sold for the Elgin Downtown Neighborhood Association’s Sips of the Season, which will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 29.

The cups serve as tickets and give the holder access to more than 20 downtown businesses offering hot holiday beverages, according to the event’s webpage. Drinks that will be offered include hot cocoa, warm apple cider, Ponche Navideño and various teas.

Cups cost $27.04 and are available for pickup during most regular operating business hours at the DNA office, 31 S. Grove Ave., Elgin. Complimentary cups for children will be available event day at participating locations.

Tickets on sale for South Elgin’s Santa breakfast, lunch

Registration is underway for the South Elgin Parks and Recreation Department’s breakfast and lunch with Santa Saturday, Nov. 22, at the Village Squire, 480 S. Randall Road, South Elgin.

Breakfast will take place from 9 to 10:30 a.m. The meal will include pancakes, eggs, bacon and a beverage, according to the South Elgin website. Lunch will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Lunch choices for kids are cheeseburgers or chicken fingers, and cheeseburgers or chicken sandwiches for adults.

Both sessions will include time with Santa, crafts, coloring and reindeer food. Attendees can take their own photos.

The cost for children is $18 for South Elgin residents and $28 for nonresidents. The adult fee is $24 for residents and $34 for nonresidents. Register at southelgin.com/residents/special_events/breakfast___lunch_with_santa.php.

NENA holding Winterlights at Butterfly Garden holiday event

The Northeast Neighborhood Association will host “Winterlights at the Butterfly Garden” from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, at the garden, 150 Ann St.., Elgin.

The free event will feature holiday lighting, a photo booth, roasted marshmallows, birdseed ornament making, holiday card making, music and singalongs, according to a social media post. There will be free tamales and hot cocoa for the first 100 visitors.

South Elgin seeking volunteers to work An Almost Winter Day

South Elgin is looking for volunteers to work various shifts between noon and 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, at an Almost Winter Day in SEBA Park, 151 S. Water St.

Jobs available include making coffee, hot chocolate and soup; working concession and soup stands; monitoring doors; and cleaning up afterward.

The event will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. It will feature a s’mores station; snowball slingshot; letters to Santa; a tree decorating contest; cookie decorating; and ice sculpting.

Thanksgiving meal box distributions start this week, next

Food for Greater Elgin will be holding a Thanksgiving meal box distribution from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, in the parking lot at Elgin Community College, 1700 Spartan Drive.

Hanover Township will be distributing meal boxes from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday through Friday, Nov. 19-21, at the Hanover Township Astor Avenue Community Center, 7431 Astor Avenue, Hanover Park.

The Elgin distribution is on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last, according to the Food for Greater Elgin website. Boxes will include a turkey, mashed potatoes, beans, corn, dessert and other items.

For the Hanover Park meal boxes, Hanover Township residents should register at the Community Center and must provide a valid ID or food pantry card. Only one meal box will be distributed per household. Each meal box will contain a 12- to 14-pound frozen turkey, canned fruits and vegetables, gravy mix, potatoes, stuffing mix, coffee and dessert.
