A 16-year-old boy was fatally wounded overnight in a shooting on the Southwest Side in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood, Chicago police said.

Shortly before 1:30 a.m., officers responded to a call of a person shot in the 6500 block of South Talman Avenue. A teenage boy was inside of a building when someone outside nearby pulled out a weapon and fired shots, striking the boy multiple times to the body, police said.

The boy, identified as Javier Jose Torres, was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was later pronounced dead, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday.

Police said the gunman fled the scene after the shooting. No one was in custody and detectives were investigating.
