A 27-year-old man who Aurora police said was armed with a knife was shot by Aurora officers Wednesday afternoon and died from his injuries, the police department said.

An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death, the department said in a press release Wednesday night.

At around 12:35 p.m. Wednesday, Aurora Police Telecommunications received a call for a person with a weapon in the 300 block of S. Broadway in Aurora, according to a release from the department Wednesday afternoon.

Responding officers found a man barricaded and armed with a weapon according to the news release. When the officers encountered the man, he displayed a knife, police said.

Aurora police officers fired shots, and the man sustained at least one gunshot wound, the police department said. Officers then began to render aid until Aurora Fire Department paramedics arrived. The fire department continued to provide emergency medical care to the man.

The involved officers were taken to a local hospital for evaluation in accordance with protocol, the release noted.

The Fox Valley Major Crimes Task Force is conducting an investigation into the officers’ actions, per the release.
