Blue Island city officials said there was an attempted robbery of an armored truck at 9:45 a.m. Thursday outside of a U.S. Bank branch at 119th Street and Western Avenue.

Multiple people fled the scene and no one was in custody as of Thursday morning, said Blue Island City Administrator Thomas Wogan.

The bank closed Wednesday, and a bank employee said Thursday it remained closed. The bank manager declined to comment, and the company did not respond to requests for comment.

Wogan said the roads near the bank are open and were were not shut down as part of investigations.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation in partnership with the Blue Island Police Department, according to a spokesperson with the FBI Chicago public affairs office.

The FBI spokesperson also said Thursday afternoon there was additional information for release.

Wogan said this is an active and ongoing investigation.

Wogan and FBI officials declined to comment about shots being fired during the robbery attempt.

There was a robbery of an armored vehicle at the same U.S. Bank branch in Blue Island in May 2025.
