An elderly man was struck and killed by a car Tuesday morning while crossing the road in northwest suburban Niles, according to local authorities.

Just after 6 a.m., the man, 84, was crossing the 5600 block of Touhy Avenue outside of a marked crosswalk when he was struck by a westbound car, a Niles Police Department spokesperson said. The man was transported to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in nearby Park Ridge with life-threatening injuries, the spokesperson said. He was later pronounced dead.

In the wake of the crash, officials closed lanes of Touhy Avenue to investigate, officials said. All east and west lanes of Touhy were closed from Central to Lehigh avenues.

Officials asked commuters to use alternate routes while their investigation continues.
