A 69-year-old man was pronounced dead after his vehicle struck a tree and speed limit sign in Niles just after midnight on Feb. 24, Niles police said in a news release.

Officers on patrol discovered the single-vehicle crash in the 7700 block of Oakton Street about 12:18 a.m., and found the 69-year-old male driver unconscious and not breathing, the news release said. He had been traveling westbound on Oakton in a 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe, and the vehicle left the road for an unknown reason and struck a speed limit sign and a tree on the north side of the street.

Police performed CPR until Niles paramedics arrived and
assumed life-saving efforts. They took him to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in critical condition, and he was pronounced dead at 1:04 a.m., according to police.

Paramedics also took a 51-year-old female passenger to Lutheran General Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said impairment is not believed to be a factor in the crash.

The Major Crash Assistance Team is assisting the Niles Police Department with the investigation.
