An 11-year-old boy was taken into protective custody after being found alone with a serious head injury on the West Side in the Garfield Park neighborhood, Chicago police said.

About 7:30 a.m., officers responded to a call to check the well-being of a boy found alone on the street with a head injury in the 200 block of South Kostner Avenue. The boy was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was listed in serious condition, police said.

The boy was placed in protective custody. Detectives were investigating.
