
Leyden High School artists lauded at Triton competition
Two Leyden High School students took top awards at the recent Triton College Art Competition in River Grove. East Leyden senior Avi Rios won Best of Painting and Best of Show for her large oil painting “Canine Companions,” and Easter Leyden junior Mia Martin was named Best of Photography for “Chilling Serenity.”
Blue ribbon winners were Bethanie Nambo,Veronika Oliinychenko, Sofia De La Torre, Olga Kruszecka, Naomi Lopez, Avi Rios, Carlos Medina, Angelis Molotla, Mia Martin, Illya Sen and Monika Tyan.
Earning a red ribbon were winners Isabel Gonzalez, Luke Gorski, Colin Mejia, Antonio Saminska, Sarai Molina, Erick Moreno, Bethanie Nambo, Aqsa Baig, Kristha Burgos Banegas, Maximiliano Cervantes, Antonio Cisneros, Caz Clarke, Giovanni Nevarez, Michelle Nwauwa, Kaylei Colon, Nevena Doncheva, Alexandria Esquivel, Timothy Ferris, Barbara Golisz, Vianey Gonzalez, Olivia Nass, Katherine Rivas, Maria Ruiz, Eva Sharova and Lukasz Sroka.

Ill. 171 bridge work closes lanes near McCook
Traffic will get a little congested near McCook when repairs begin March 16 for the bridge taking Ill. 171 over Joliet Road, the Illinois Department of Transportation has announced, so drivers should watch for flaggers and obey speed limits.
The work means Ill. 171 will go down to one lane in each direction just before the bridge. Lane shifts on both sides of the road also will occur during the $1.7 million project, which is expected to be finished in July.
The work includes repairing the bridge deck, approaches and structures, as well as installing a new deck overly and replacing expansion joints.
Drivers are urged to take alternate routes and allow extra time while traveling through the area.Information on IDOT projects is available at idot.illinois.gov.
Clarendon Hills church hosts chamber concert
The Orion Ensemble performs an afternoon of chamber music at 3 p.m. March 15 at Community Presbyterian Church, 39 N. Prospect Ave. in Clarendon Hills.
The group, which has been together since 1992, will play Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Trio in B-Flat Major for Clarinet, Cello and Piano, Op. 11”; a new composition for the ensemble by Ephraim Champion, of Chicago; and Anton Arensky’s “Trio in D Minor for Violin, Cello and Piano, Op. 11.”
The concert is free although donations will be accepted. Information is at chcpc.org.
Boy Scouts host annual pancake breakfast
Fans of pancakes are invited to the 47th annual breakfast benefiting Boy Scout Troop 101 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 15 at Eisenhower Junior High School, 1410 75th St. in Darien.
Tickets at the door cost $9 per person, with children younger than 6 and Cub Scouts in uniform eating for free. The menu includes all-you-can eat pancakes, eggs, sausage, orange juice and coffee.
Historian reviews nation’s history at Elmhurst U.
Presidential historian Michael Beschloss will give a talk titled “Leadership Through the Ages: America at 250” at 7 p.m. March 17 in Hammerschmidt Memorial Chapel, 190 Prospect Ave. in Elmhurst.
The program, this year’s Rudolf G. Schade Lecture on History, Ethics and Law, will cover “the triumphs, failures and defining moments that have steered the nation through crisis and change,” according to a news release.
Beschloss, the bestselling author of 10 books, including “Presidents of War: The Epic Story, from 1807 to Modern Times,” has served as a historian at the Smithsonian Institution, been a scholar at the University of Oxford and a senior fellow at the Annenberg Foundation.
Copies of his book will be available to buy in the lobby before the lecture, and a book signing will follow the event. Doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets for the program cost $15 but it’s free for Elmhurst University faculty, students, staff and alumni. Buy tickets at elmhurst.edu/Cultural.
Association sets sights on West for its gala
Under the Western Sky is the theme of the annual gala presented by the Nineteenth Century Charitable Association at 5 p.m. March 21 at 178 Forest Ave. in Oak Park.

Fridays feature Lenten fish fry in Naperville
Fish frys will be served from 5 to 9 p.m. Fridays in Lent through March 27 at Sts. Peter and Paul Church, 36 N. Ellsworth St. in Naperville.
Knights of Columbus Council 1369 will offer a six-piece jumbo shrimp dinner for $15, all-you-can-eat wish fish dinner for $15, kids’ white fish dinner for $10 and cheese pizza dinner with juice box and cookie for $7. Other dinners come with a roll, coleslaw and cookie.
