ELGIN LIBRARY OFFERING WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH EVENTS

In celebration of Women’s History Month, Gail Borden Public Library in downtown Elgin is hosting a “250 Years of Impactful Women in Illinois” exhibit and presenting several related programs and performances.

The exhibit is on display through March 31, on the second floor of the main library, 270 N. Grove Ave. according to a news release. It offers a look at the pivotal contributions of women from the late 1700s to the modern era.

The following programs are also planned:

  • Día Internacional de la Mujer Latina: International Women’s Day will be celebrated at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 11. A panel will discuss women and migration, women’s human rights, migratory grief and inspiring stories of community, leadership and commitment. Olga Rikova will provide live music.
  • A World War II Women Spies lecture will be presented at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 12. Author Kit Sergeant will speak about the women in her books, including Nancy Wake, known as “The White Mouse,” and Marie-Madeleine Fourcade, who guided hundreds of French Resistance agents through wartime France.
  • The Founding Mothers: Unsung Women of the Revolution will be presented at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 26. The program will highlight the courageous and often overlooked women who played vital roles in the fight for independence.

ECC HOSTING ART COMPETITION AND EXHIBIT IN MARCH

Eleven Elgin Community College students will be featured in a statewide art competition and exhibition hosted by ECC that gets underway with an awards reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 11, in the Safety-Kleen Gallery, Building H, 1700 Spartan Drive.

The exhibit will be on view from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays through March 27, according to a news release.

It explores craft, innovative ideas and individual voices, Katy Ro, ECC’s associate dean of liberal, visual and performing arts, said in the release. It will feature award-winning pieces by student artists and designers from the eight community colleges that make up the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference.

Projects on display will include video, painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, graphic design, ceramics and sculpture.

AUTHOR TO PRESENT MARCH 12 TALK ON GHOSTLY IRELAND

Chad Lewis, author and researcher, will be discuss Ireland’s mythology and macabre tales from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, March 12, at The Alcove, 256 B Washington St., Carpentersville.

Lewis has traveled the world for 30 years in search of unique and bizarre stories and history, according to his website. His books include “Supernatural Lake Superior” and “The Illinois Guide to Haunted Places.”
