Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Spring cleaning used to mean a weekend of heavy lifting, scrubbing and a lingering scent of bleach throughout the home. You would clear the calendar and tackle every corner of your home until you were physically exhausted from the manual labor.

vacuums that empty themselves

But the landscape of home maintenance has shifted. Today, we have access to all sorts of autonomous helpers. These include vacuums that empty themselves, robot mops that scrub and even mowers that manicure your lawn without human intervention.

In the BestReviews Testing Lab, we’ve found that the seasonal ritual of breaking your back is beginning to fade. When your space is routinely cleaned by a robot, the concept of a deep clean, clearing neglected grime and debris, becomes less of an annual necessity.

This shift in the market has been swift and clear. For years, the robot vacuum, dominated in the early days by Roomba, was the only major player in this space. But, as years have come and gone and technology has become stronger, other brands have made competitive products, too.

The rise of the robot bot

dedicated mopping machines

The biggest change lately is the shift from simple vacuum-first hybrids to dedicated mopping machines. In the past, a robot mop was usually just a robot vacuum that dragged a damp cloth across the floor. It was better than nothing, but not a viable replacement for a traditional mop and bucket.

Now, we are seeing machines that actually scrub and apply pressure to various floor types. After putting dozens of these robots to the test in our January testing cohort, we want to share how they can help you win back hours of your week.

eufy C28 Roller Mop

The most stark evolution is in how these robots handle water. For example, the eufy C28 Roller Mop is a standout for anyone who has a home dominated by hardwood flooring. Instead of the usual spinning pads, it uses a 10.7-inch roller that reminded us of a professional floor scrubber. During testing, it was exceptional at handling liquid spills, proving it to be a formidable tool in a home.

eufy Omni E28

The industry is also solving the problem of those hard-to-reach spots that robots usually miss. The eufy Omni E25 and E28 are great examples of this. The E25 is a solid all-rounder with impressive suction, but the E28 builds on that, introducing a detachable manual wet-vac hose directly in the base station. It is an ideal choice for homes with young children or pets, offering the daily convenience of a robot alongside a powerful manual hose for those urgent, targeted messes.

iRobot Roomba Plus 405

Even the original players have pivoted. The iRobot Roomba Plus 405 marks a major step forward in mapping speed with its impressive LiDAR system. In generations past, you may have had to wait an hour for the robot to learn your layout. Now, the Roomba can map your entire home in just one pass. The AutoWash dock jumped out during testing, cleaning the mop thoroughly, removing any chance of a damp smell in your home.

Roborock QV 35A

For those who prioritize raw power, the latest from Roborock shows just how far suction technology has come. The Roborock QV 35A is one of the best values on the market, offering dual spinning mops and impressive suction at an entry-level price point.

Roborock Saros 10

If you want the top-end, however, the Roborock Saros 10 offers great maneuverability, allowing the robot to slide under tight spaces, reaching the hard-to-clean spots. The Saros 10 stands out because its sheer power allows it to tack deep-pile rugs in a single pass, which is something most other robots cannot yet handle.

Beyond the living room: the great outdoors

Automation is rapidly moving outside of the four walls of the home. We’re seeing massive growth in three areas that were once strictly manual labor, and the tech has finally caught up to the promise.

Robot lawnmowers

Modern robotic mowers

The days of pushing a mower in the summer heat are coming to an end for many homeowners. Modern robotic mowers have ditched the old requirements for perimeter wires. Instead, they use GPS and satellite navigation to stay within your property lines. Because they cut the grass several times weekly, these robot mowers keep your lawn at a consistent, healthy height. This leads to a lusher, greener lawn with less effort than ever from the homeowner.

Robot window cleaners

If you live in a space with large, hard-to-reach windows or floor-to-ceiling glass sliding doors, a robotic window cleaner can be a game-changer. They use powerful suction to stay attached to the vertical glass while moving in a precise grid pattern. Beyond saving time, these robots offer a genuine safety benefit by eliminating the need to climb tall ladders just to reach your windows. They are a practical solution for modern homes where floor-to-ceiling windows are a priority, but keeping them clean can be a logistical nightmare.

Robot pool cleaners

Pool maintenance has shifted toward cordless, intelligent units that are far more capable than the suction-side cleaners of the past. The newest robot pool cleaner models map the walls and floor of a pool, ensuring that every inch is scrubbed clean. The focus is no longer on simply clearing debris, but rather cleaning grime and oil buildups.
